Barrier Island's in Winter 2010 -- St. Simons Island, GA

Would I do it again in January?  Probably not.

This time, though, we didn't have a choice.  I had already rescheduled our 6th Anniversary get-away to St. Simons Island when I sprained my ankle in November.   No more putting it off.....it was time!

So, my dear hubby, Frank, and I loaded up the car with our winter gloves, hats, coats, and chapstick and headed for the King & Prince Hotel on St. Simons Island, GA.

We had a positive attitude that all would be great -- how much colder could it get, afterall.

It was 40 degrees when we left Florida and even colder 1 1/2 hours later when we arrived in St. Simons, but the sun was out and we were prepared.  We thought.

Thank goodness for Andy Hill, owner of www.privateislandsofgeorgia.com/ and Eagle Lodge.  Even though he wasn't in town (his office is in St. Siimons) he was kind enough to get passes for us at the Private Resort - The Cloisters and Lodge on Sea Island  --(www.seaisland.com/Home.asp).

This indoor tour luxury tour opportunity was just what we needed in this below freezing weather.

So, after we checked into the beautiful King and Prince (http://www.kingandprince.com/)%20and bundled up, we headed immediately to the warm car and the Cloisters Resort.  The photos tell it all.

What a place.  Adorned in all the best of wood, carved furniture, paintings, fixtures, etc.  The hallway seemed endless with ballrooms and conference rooms, studies, libraries, cigar rooms, cognac rooms, and the like all jutting off of the main hall.

Of course, the highlight was sitting in the same chair the GEORGE BUSH sat in during the G8 conference at the Cloisters several years ago.  I think maybe 2000 or 2001.

The flag from each nation attending was carved and placed into the beautiful oak table made by a local craftsman.

That's me sitting in Tony Blair's chair.

The room had the energy of power and MEN!  Wood, leather, strength, comfort.  Each person had an engraved plate on the back of their specific chair.

The entire table...not sure what was going on with the light in that room.

The resort has the largest collection of oriental rugs and they are displayed for our pleasure throughout the halls and rooms of the resort.  We were in awe and delighted in this special opportunity.

The library was ALL WOOD and loaded, I mean LOADED with leather-bound books and set up for a comfortable day of books, discussion, and leisure.

I could hardly tear Frank away...... but if we stopped he would find comfort for sure in one of those velvet chairs.

We still wanted to see the 65k foot spa across the street, so we wrapped up again and were off to this massive spa with everything you could want.  Indoor pool, jacuzzi, classes, fitness center, boutique, products, etc. etc. etc.  --

The entrance was beautiful with a flowing fountain and a pond full of coi fish.

They were hungry too.  When they heard our steps on the wood plank deck, the surfaced with their mouths open --

LOOK CLOSE!  Their mouths are wide open.

We wanted to check out the spa jacuzzi which holds about 100 people I think.  It was more like a pool.  I thought I'd take a dive.

The humidity was so heavy in there we could hardly breathe.  Quite a change from the freezing, dry air just outside the door.  My hair and skin wanted to stay there forever!

Here's a sample of the type of cars that were parked outside!

Yes, that's a Bentley.  And, a fine one at that!

We were overwhelmed with the beauty and luxury that is behind the gates at Sea Island.  And, we weren't finished yet.

Andy also had a pass for us to the Lodge on Sea Island, another Cloister property.  It is the Golf Clubhouse.  Every day at 5PM the bagpipes are played for an hour.  Rain, sleet or snow -- Frank was going to see the bagpipes played.  That was his treat from me and a surprise for him.

We didn't quite know that it was outside on the golf practice greens, but found out quickly that we would be wrapped in blankets with a butane heater if we wanted to enjoy this special treat.

I have never been so cold purposely!  My NOSE!  I couldn't even feel it.  This was Frank's suggestion.

Yes, I could've been inside with the warm fireplace in the lobby, but then the bagpipe player would have Zero Audience.

We were the ONLY ones out there watching him as he played his best with his freezing hands, cheeks, and breath.  A fine job he did.  I hollered to him -- 'Top of the Evening to You".....he responded, "And the rest of the day to you."  I was touched.

\

Can you see him -- way behind Frrank standing like a lone soldier on the greens.  ?????

It was worth every minute -- but as soon as it was over we ran back inside and warmed our hands by the wonderful fireplace and toasted our special anniversary.

We need a nap before dining at Halyard's that night.  Our next day would be more touring and outside, so we needed to get some sleep.

Up early enough to get a wonderful photo of the sunrise before we left the hotel.  This is from our room.

Bright and early, we loaded up the car and checked out of the K&P Hotel.  We were off to the lighthouse and the slave quarters and then home.

There is nothing more nostalgic and warmly regarded as a Lighthouse and this one is pretty special.  I sat in the car while Frank took the picture.  It was below freezing and even the waitresses at the 4th of May had gloves and jackets on when we had breakfast.

Fortunately, the sun was out that day and we were able to get out of the car and check out the slave quarters before heading home.  "Anybody home." See that it is made out of coquina!

Not bad digs and a wonderful spot for the beautiful coastal sunsets (this one was at the Lodge)

The amazing difference in the vegetation is astounding..oak canopies and spanish moss.

Even a winterized tree looks good in moss.

All in all, a glorious get-away and just a short drive from our beach area.  Try it!  Maybe when it gets a little warmer, but try it for sure.

A Slice of Palm Valley.....A Slice of Delight!

We've been trying, and we finally made it to the Palm Valley Fish Camp.

Everytime we go by, the parking lot is full, so we snuck in on this Father's Day early evening to find 2 seats only at the bar with a 4 hour wait if we didn't have a reservation.

Now that's busy! And that's popular! And, that most likely won't change with all the delicious food and ambiance we experienced tonight.

I'm not a foodie, but Frank is and he is a happy camper! Couldn't hardly move after the wonderfully tasty feast we had tonight.

With no choice but the bar....we sidled on up and took our seats at the bar of bars! The beautiful Granite countertop held our attention as one of the many special touches throughout the restaurant. I'm not sure how many people were there tonight, but it was full. The bar, the booths, the two-somes, the four-somes and the bench tables were absolutely full and friendly.

The conversation didn't stop and the wait staff didn't either. (doesn't Zach look like Jack Black? :) )

With the heat index at 100 degrees easily at 530PM, the A/C was doing all it could to keep us happy and the waitstaff infused with the necessary energy for the crowd.

We were soooooooo happy with our waitress, Nicole. She was overwhelmed, hot, and tired -- but her smile lit the bar and we knew she wanted us to be happy.

Then there was the Prep guy in the kitchen (sorry, I didn't get your name) with at least 8 other cooks and staff -- all running like a clock. I didn't get their names, but you'll know who they are when you stop by -- and I know you will be stopping by.

The staff stopped and talked to us as if we were neighbors -- all young and ambitious kids (one from Phoenix - darn, I didn't snap her picture, who was fighting the humidity as compared to the dry west coast -- all with a smile.)

Frank tried the salmon and I tried everything I could listed under appetizers and I can tell you honestly -- WE LOVED IT ALL.

The salmon was perfectly crisp and moist with that special touch of excellence -- served with delish spinach and parsley potatoes. Yummy! I first tried the flounder ceviche (as I've been trying to duplicate the ceviche I loved in Hawaii -- and this was close, very close) -- then I had to try to peel and eat shrimp --- perfect. Need I say more?

The Fish House Chardonnay was the ideal wine to mix with my dishes. And the evening was a special ending for a Father's Day to be remembered.

As the owner of this and Marker 32, Lisa Groshell, said -- 'This is the baby of Marker 32 and it is experiencing it's Toddler Time! (sorry about this shot Lisa -- you were on the move!)
To me, that means, curiosity, adventure, openness, and wonder. I say, it is the magical combination of fine dining and palm valley..... How perfect!

We ended outside trying out all the seating areas that will be used when the temperatures change a little.

A chance to meet and visit with Rob Parham (travel photograper) was another highlight of the evening and a little insight on the variety of people who visit Palm Valley Fish Camp.

Do visit -- you'll be glad, very glad, you did!

We'll Make Reservations Next Time!!! Table for 8?

An Awesome Deal!

VERO BEACH

Last year, Frank and I enjoyed this new boutique hotel in Vero Beach. What an awesome experience and so close to home! It is the new hotel of Gloria Estefan's, with great shopping and restaurants right across the street.

Here is the view from the pool with the ocean just a dive away! Also, yea, that's my hunk of a husband!

The surf and shore mingle with style and sophistication awaiting you for the most exquisite beachfront getaway. We swam in the pool while we looked out into the ocean just steps away. Nothing like it!

Check out the special package they are offering! Shall we join you?

It is soooo worth it! Will we see you there?

Key West via Ft. Myers

With my exciting trip planned for my son's 34th birthday -- we headed to the west coast of Florida from Jacksonville eager to embark on this nostalgic adventure of meeting the past with the present.

Returning to Key West to show my 3rd son the trek I made to Key West in 1965 from the real west coast (California) when dear old dad retired from the Navy and headed to this southernmost point, was the real reason for this birthday adventure.

We had our reservations confirmed for one night at the Key West Best Western Hibiscus Hotel (1965-Hibiscus Motel); non-refundable tickets for the 4-hour boat trip on the Key West Express Ferry Boat out of Ft. Myers; and 2 nights at the Embassy Suites for our departure and return to Ft. Myers.

What could go wrong? Ha! Everything!

Mother Nature was howling and blowing her casket from the time we left Jacksonville. The winds wouldn't let up. The boat ride cancelled one hour after our 7 hour trip to Ft. Myers. And, me holding non-refundable tickets. We also clearly missed the 72-hour cancellation terms at the Hibiscus Hotel. The message was from the captain said......'due to high winds and seas of 10-12 ft., the boat to Key West is cancelled today.' What now? Panic........visions of $$$$ being literally 'blown' away.

We did what anyone would do in this situation......went went to the local tiki bar & grill, the Sandy Parrot, where my son just happens to be Manager. We brought our party there.

The Sandy Parrot in Ft. Myers Beach had everything we needed -- great food, tiki bar, music, great people, casual atmosphere, friendly staff. While it wasn't Key West -- it would have to do while we plotted how to get our $$ back.

I must say that Rita at the Hibiscus Hotel in Key West was wonderful and obliging. If they booked out the hotel for that night, they would sell our rooms for us. It worked -- they did sell our rooms. $$ saved due to her diligence. We shall return, Rita!

The ferry boat was not quite as obliging as we did have a non-refundable ticket -- but we DO have 2 years to use them, so all was not lost. We shall return there too with Mother Nature's blessings. (TIP*read the small print on contracts signed)

The Embassy Suites in Ft. Myers on Corkscrew Road was a pleasurable experience all by itself. One of the best stays we have had anywhere, at any hotel with free full breakfast and complimentary reception each evening. As Arnold would say -- We'll be back!

Ok, so the trip wasn't as planned, but we had experiences that we would not otherwise have enjoyed. For instance, the trip back to Jacksonville via S.R. 70. Now, that is central Florida at its best. Ever wonder what is beyond the concrete of the big cities like Orlando, Tampa, etc. and in between the west and east coast of Florida? Well, I'll tell you --- pastureland, horses, cows, orange groves, bee hives, and not a McDonald's in sight (fortunately for the cows :))

What a trip! What an adventure! We will definitely make this happen again and next time not so far in advance. Mother Nature does rule!
